Outline of the Center

Background and Areas of Activity

Established in 1987 as a not-for-profit organization under the supervision of the then Management and Coordination Agency, and made into a public interest incorporated foundation in 2012, the Center for Human Rights Education and Training serves as a national center for human rights education and training in Japan. The Center, which maintains a non-political, neutral and impartial position, strives for the realization of a society where the basic human rights and fundamental freedoms of each person are respected.

In order to cultivate the culture of human rights in Japan, the Center provides the most up-to-date information on human rights and offers comprehensive models of human rights education and training for civil servants, company employees, staff of non-profit organizations, teachers, students, and the general public who are interested in human rights issues. The Center also acts as a focal point in Japan for the exchange of information on human rights with people and organizations in other countries.

For these purposes, the Center conducts program activities in the following areas:

1. Comprehensive education and awareness-building on human rights;
2. Collection and dissemination of information on human rights;
3. Research and study on human rights issues;
4. Training on human rights issues;
5. Assistance to other organizations working on human rights education and training;
6. International cooperation on human rights issues;
